The Lake city is known for its parks and its cycling culture. Salt Lake City is the largest city in the U.S. state of Utah, as well as the county seat of Utah County, located about thirty miles (50 km) south of Salt Lake City. The city is sometimes referred to as the “Gateway to the West” and “Gateway Park City”. The Salt Lake City housing market is always of interest.
Salt Lake City has a long history of human settlements dating back to around 11,000 years ago, with evidence of ancient Native American settlements in the area.
The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and was named after the English explorer John C. Frémont, who had been killed nearby during an Indian attack on his exploration party in 1846.
By 1860, when most of what is now Salt Lake County was within territorial boundaries (the county was later organized), it became a major transportation center for settlers traveling to California after the discovery of gold in that state’s Sierra Nevada foothills. The town grew from 2,500 residents in 1890 to over 50,000 by 1910.
After 1900, with increased immigration from Europe and Asia, railroads were constructed linking Utah communities with major urban centers such as Los Angeles and San Francisco via Salt Lake City’s downtown railway station.
During World War II it served as a military center for training troops for combat service along the western front; its location between San Francisco and Seattle on the newly opened transcontinental railroad made it a popular base for military recruitment and training exercises leading up to those conflicts.
The growing size and importance of Salt Lake City have resulted in numerous controversies over zoning laws and other land use policies designed to limit urban sprawl eastward toward Denver.
After many decades of growth outstripping its population limits (by more than 10% each decade since 1970), Salt Lake County continued annexing neighboring communities under Proposition 1A until 2009 when voters approved Measure U reversing that trend by re-zoning more than ninety-six percent of the land within municipal boundaries into suburban residential areas while preserving historic downtown areas and open space preserves such as Temple Square Park Alta Mesa Zoo & Botanical Gardens.
This made Salt Lake County one of only two counties where suburban populations actually outpaced urban populations; however, this trend reversed following Measure U’s passage in 2010 due to an influx of transit-oriented development into downtown areas pioneered by transit-oriented development initiatives such as Liberty Street Station.
